Peter asks Jesus a question most of us have probably wondered at some point: how many times are we expected to forgive someone who keeps hurting us? Peter suggests seven times, which sounds generous, but Jesus answers with a number so large that counting becomes pointless. His response shifts the question away from how much forgiveness another person deserves and toward what kind of people grace is forming us to become.

Jesus tells of a servant who owes a king an impossible debt. The servant cannot repay it, yet the king responds with compassion and cancels everything. The servant then finds someone who owes him far less and refuses to show the mercy he has just received. The tragedy is not simply that he struggles to forgive. He has received grace without allowing grace to change him. He wants mercy for himself while continuing to keep strict accounts with everyone else.

Christian forgiveness does not mean pretending that sin is small or that the wounds people cause do not matter. Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation, restored trust, or removing healthy boundaries. Wrongdoing can be confronted, consequences may remain, and some relationships should not return to what they once were. Forgiveness means releasing personal vengeance into God’s hands and refusing to allow resentment to determine the person we become.

We are able to forgive because we first remember the mercy we have received. God’s grace does not simply pardon us and leave us unchanged. Sanctifying grace continues working within us, loosening bitterness, healing wounded places, and teaching us to respond differently. Forgiven people are called to become forgiving people, not because sin is small, but because mercy is great.
