John 17:20–23

Jesus prays for those who will believe in Him through the witness of His disciples. He asks that His followers may be one, and He connects their unity with the world recognizing that the Father sent Him.

Devotional

On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed for people He had not yet met. He prayed for those who would believe because of the witness of His first disciples. In other words, Jesus prayed for us.

He knew the Church would eventually stretch across cultures, languages, nations, and generations. He also knew how easily people divide. So He prayed that His followers would be one.

Jesus was not praying that Christians would never disagree. Christian unity does not require pretending that differences are unimportant. It does mean that disagreement should not become an excuse for contempt. Jesus wanted something deeper than surface agreement. He wanted His followers to share a life rooted in the love of God.

The world already knows how to divide people into camps. It knows how to shame, label, mock, and assume the worst. The Church should know another way.

Jesus connects our unity with our witness. The way Christians treat one another tells the world something about the Christ we proclaim. That can be encouraging when grace is visible among us, and uncomfortable when it is not.

People notice when Christians preach reconciliation but live in bitterness. They notice when we speak about love while treating one another with cruelty. They also notice when people who disagree still choose patience, honesty, forgiveness, and respect.

Our witness is not only what we say about Jesus. It is also what our life together says about Him.

Action

Before speaking critically about another Christian or group of Christians today, ask whether your words will make Christ easier or harder to see.

Prayer

Father, Jesus prayed that His followers would be one, and I confess how easily disagreement becomes division in my heart. Teach me to speak truth with love, to listen before assuming, and to refuse contempt. Where reconciliation is possible, give me courage to seek it. Where disagreement remains, help me continue to see others through the eyes of grace. May the way Your people live together point beyond us and toward Jesus. In His name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day
The way Christians love one another is part of the witness we give to the world.

Jesus prayed that His followers would be one, and He connected that unity with the Church’s witness. “That the World May Know” reflects on John 17:20–23 and what our relationships say about the Christ we proclaim.
