Ephesians 2:8–10

Salvation comes by grace through faith as God’s gift. Those made new in Christ are created for the good works God prepares for them.

Devotional

If we cannot earn God’s love, why does it matter whether we serve? That question makes sense if we’ve learned to think of faith as a transaction. We do something good, and God credits our account. But Paul describes a different relationship between grace and the good we do.

We’re saved by grace through faith. Then, as people made new in Christ, we’re called into a life of good works.

The order matters. A meal taken to a grieving family cannot purchase forgiveness. It can nourish people who are too tired to cook and remind them they aren’t alone. A visit to someone in prison doesn’t increase our worth before God. It can bear witness to the love that refuses to forget a person behind locked doors. The good work matters because the person receiving it matters. We don’t have to turn that person’s need into an opportunity to improve our spiritual standing.

This can bring freedom to the way we serve. We can stop wondering whether we’ve accumulated enough good deeds and ask where love is needed. We can also acknowledge our limits. Accepting help or taking necessary rest doesn’t erase our place in God’s affection. Faithfulness includes learning to serve as members of a body rather than acting as though every need depends on us alone.

God’s grace gives our service both its beginning and its direction. We’ve been loved into a new life, and now we get to participate in His care for the world. That is work worth doing, even when nobody keeps count.

Action

Do one useful act of kindness without seeking recognition. Let the person’s actual need guide your choice, and thank God for the opportunity to care.

Prayer

Gracious God, thank You that I don’t have to earn a place in Your love. Free me from treating service as a way to prove my worth. Open my eyes to the good You’ve placed before me, and help me respond with wisdom and compassion. Teach me to value the person I’m serving more than the recognition I might receive. Give me humility to accept help, courage to use my gifts, and joy in participating in Your work. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day
Good works don’t purchase grace; they give grateful love something useful to do.

A meal, a visit, or a quiet act of kindness matters because the person receiving it matters. Ephesians 2:8–10 invites us to serve from the freedom of being loved rather than the pressure to earn our worth.
