Paul tells believers that through faith in Christ they have become children of God and have been clothed with Christ. The differences people use to rank one another can no longer determine a person’s worth or standing in the family of God.
Devotional
We spend a surprising amount of time deciding where people fit. We notice age, education, income, nationality, occupation, politics, denomination, social standing, and a hundred other things. Some of those differences are real and meaningful. They shape our stories and experiences, but Paul reminds us that none of them determines our worth before God.
Those who belong to Christ have been “clothed with Christ.” That is a beautiful image because it changes what has the final word about us. The labels people use may describe part of our story, but they do not define our value. Our achievements, failures, background, and status are never more important than the fact that we are invited to belong to Christ.
Paul is not saying that our differences disappear or that they no longer matter. He is saying they lose the power to determine who is closer to God, who matters more, or who deserves greater dignity. In Christ, the things the world uses to rank people are no longer the measure of a person’s worth.
The Lord’s Table gives us a picture of that truth. The wealthy person and the person struggling to pay bills receive the same bread. The person with several degrees and the person who struggled through school receive the same grace. The lifelong believer and the person taking hesitant first steps both depend completely upon Jesus. None of us brings a better résumé to Communion because all of us come in need of the same grace.
That should change the way we see one another. The Church should be one of the places where human value is not determined by what someone owns, earns, knows, or can do for us. Grace gives us another way to look at people. Before anything else, we can remember that this is someone Christ loves, and that alone is enough to make them precious.
Action
Pay attention today when you instinctively rank or categorize someone. When you notice it happening, replace that first judgment with the reminder, “This is a person Christ loves.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that my worth does not depend upon status, success, possessions, or the approval of others. Thank You that through faith I belong to You. Forgive me when I measure other people by standards You never gave me. Teach me to see beyond labels and recognize the dignity of every person. Clothe my words, choices, and relationships with Your grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day
The labels people give us are never more important than the grace Christ gives us.
The world has many ways of ranking people, but grace gives us another way to see. “Seen Through Christ” reflects on Galatians 3:26–29 and the dignity we share when Christ becomes our deepest identity.
