Paul tells God’s people to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. They are to forgive one another and let love hold the community together.
Devotional
Every morning, we decide what to wear before we walk out the door. Paul uses that ordinary image to describe the kind of life Christians are called to put on. We are to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These qualities sound beautiful until we realize that we need them most around the people who test them.
It is easy to be patient with someone who never irritates us. It is easy to be gentle when there is nothing difficult to say. Christian character becomes most visible when relationships are strained, feelings are hurt, and understanding does not come easily.
Paul also tells believers to bear with one another. That phrase quietly admits something important about Christian community. Living together requires patience because people are not always easy. Neither are we. Everyone carries weaknesses, habits, wounds, and struggles that can make relationships difficult.
Sometimes another person truly needs to change. At other times, the thing God wants to change is our impatience, pride, or unwillingness to listen. Spiritual wisdom helps us recognize the difference and respond with both grace and truth.
Paul then brings forgiveness into the picture. We forgive because Christ has forgiven us. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring harm, excusing wrongdoing, or pretending that trust was never damaged. It means we refuse to allow resentment to take root and become the thing that shapes our hearts and directs our lives.
Christian community is not held together because everyone is naturally compatible or always agrees. We are held together by the grace of Christ, and that grace continues to teach us how to bear with, forgive, and love one another.

Prayer
Gracious God, clothe me today with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Where I am easily irritated, slow me down. Where pride makes me defensive, soften me. Where resentment remains, help me begin the work of forgiveness. Teach me to bear with others as they also bear with me, and let Your love shape the way I treat the people around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
