The Rock and the Keys title image representing Matthew 16:13–20 with a sturdy rock, an ancient key, and a church in the distance, symbolizing Peter’s confession and the Church’s kingdom witness.
“The rock is the confession. The keys are the responsibility. And the Church belongs to Jesus.”
Matthew 16:13-20

Matthew 16:13–20 centers on the question Jesus asks His disciples: “Who do you say I am?” Peter answers, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” His confession is true, even though he still has much to learn about what that truth means. Peter reminds us that faith isn’t the end of learning. We confess Christ, and then grace continues shaping our understanding, our priorities, and the way we live.

Jesus then says, “I will build my church.” The Church belongs to Christ, not to pastors, families, committees, congregations, or denominations. We are stewards, not owners. That truth should humble us, but it should also free us from fear. Our responsibility is to remain faithful by worshiping, teaching, serving, making disciples, caring for others, and proclaiming Christ. Jesus is the One who builds His Church, and even the power of death cannot overcome what He is doing.

The keys of the kingdom represent authority and responsibility. The Church has been entrusted with the good news that sinners can be forgiven, broken lives can be restored, and people who feel beyond hope can find new life in Jesus Christ. Those keys do not give us ownership of grace. Christian authority should reflect the character of Jesus through truth, mercy, humility, service, and a desire for restoration rather than control.

The Church stands on the confession that Jesus is the Christ and carries that confession into the world. The keys are not meant to stay inside the church building. We carry Christ’s kingdom witness into homes, workplaces, hospitals, nursing homes, jail cells, neighborhoods, and conversations with people who need hope. The rock is the confession, the keys are the responsibility, and the Church belongs to Jesus.
