Ephesians 2:13–19 proclaims that those who were once far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. Jesus breaks down dividing walls, makes peace, reconciles people to God, and welcomes believers into God’s household.
Devotional: Few feelings ache quite like feeling like an outsider. You can be in the room and still feel far away. You can hear the conversation and still feel like it is not meant for you. You can watch others belong and wonder if there will ever be a place for you.
Ephesians speaks right into that ache. Paul tells believers that those who were once far away have been brought near through Christ. That phrase carries a whole world of grace. Brought near. Not barely tolerated. Not kept on the edge. Not told to stand at a distance and be grateful for scraps. Brought near.
Christ does more than offer individual comfort. He breaks down walls. He makes peace. He reconciles people to God and to one another. The gospel creates a new household where former strangers become family. That does not erase every difference between people, but it does change how we see one another. In Christ, belonging is not based on background, status, history, or human approval. It is based on grace.
This can be hard for us to live out. We are often better at building walls than crossing them. We know how to sort people quickly. We notice who feels familiar and who does not. But Jesus has already done the costly work of reconciliation. He did not give Himself so we could rebuild the walls He tore down.
The Church should be the place where people see what grace-shaped belonging looks like. Not shallow friendliness. Not pretending differences do not matter. But real welcome rooted in Christ’s peace.
If you feel far away today, hear the good news. Christ brings the far-off near. If you already know you belong, hear the calling. Make room for others in the household of grace.
Action: Consider whether there is someone you have kept at a distance, even quietly. Pray for them today and look for one way to practice Christ-shaped peace.
Prayer: God of peace, thank You for bringing me near through Jesus Christ. Thank You that I am no longer a stranger to Your mercy. Forgive me for the walls I build in my heart, my habits, and my relationships. Teach me to live as part of Your household of grace. Help me welcome others with humility and love. Where there is distance, bring peace. Where there is suspicion, grow compassion. Where there is division, make Christ visible. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: In Christ, grace brings the far-off near and makes strangers family.
Ephesians 2:13–19 gives us the beautiful promise that those who were once far away have been brought near through Christ. We are not left outside, waiting to see if we are acceptable enough to enter. Through Jesus, grace brings us into the household of God.
That same grace changes how we see others. Christ breaks down walls, makes peace, and creates a family that human pride could never build. The Church is called to become a living sign of that welcome, a place where mercy brings people near instead of keeping them at a distance.
If you feel far away today, Christ still brings people near. If you know you belong, make room for someone else.
