Washed and Renewed — A wide 16:9 photo-realistic image of clear water flowing over smooth stones in a gentle stream, sunlight reflecting off the surface, symbolizing cleansing and renewal. The image includes the title Washed and Renewed and the full scripture text of Titus 3:4–7.

In Titus 3:4-7, Paul explains that salvation comes not because of righteous things we have done, but because of God’s mercy. Through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, believers receive new life and the hope of eternal inheritance.

Devotional: One of the quiet temptations during Lent is the belief that if we just try hard enough, we can fix ourselves. We give something up, add a new spiritual practice, or commit to better habits, and those things can be helpful. But underneath it all, there can still be a subtle assumption that change depends mostly on us.

Titus gently dismantles that idea. Paul makes it clear that salvation does not come from our effort or goodness. It comes from God’s mercy. That word mercy matters because it reminds us that transformation begins with compassion, not achievement. God sees our need and responds with love.

The phrase “washing of rebirth” paints a powerful picture. It suggests cleansing, renewal, and beginning again. Anyone who has ever carried regret or shame understands how deeply we long for that kind of fresh start. We want to know that our past does not have the final word. Scripture assures us that through Christ, God provides exactly that.

Lent creates space for honesty about where we need renewal. We notice attitudes that need softening, wounds that need healing, and patterns that need breaking. But the goal is not self-condemnation. The goal is openness to God’s renewing work. The Holy Spirit does what we cannot do alone, reshaping our hearts and guiding our steps.

Sometimes renewal feels dramatic. More often it feels gradual. We begin responding differently. We notice patience growing where frustration once lived. We feel hope where discouragement used to settle. These are signs that God is at work within us.

God’s kindness appears before we deserve it. God’s renewal continues even when we struggle. God’s grace carries us forward into new life.

As we move through Lent, we are reminded that faith is not about proving ourselves worthy. It is about receiving the mercy already offered. We are washed. We are renewed. We are made heirs of hope.

Action: Spend a few moments thanking God for His mercy today. Reflect on one area of your life where you need renewal and invite the Holy Spirit to begin that work.

Prayer: Merciful God, thank You that Your love does not depend on my performance. Thank You that You wash away what I cannot erase and renew what I cannot restore. During this Lenten season, help me release shame and receive Your mercy more fully. Renew my heart through Your Spirit and guide me into the life You desire for me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day: God’s mercy creates the new beginning we cannot create ourselves.

Titus 3:4-7 reminds us that salvation and renewal come from God’s mercy, not our effort. Lent invites us to receive the fresh start God offers through the Spirit.
