In 1 John 3:1-2, John reminds believers that God’s love is so great that we are called His children, and that is what we truly are. Our identity begins with God’s love, and while we do not yet fully see what we will become, transformation is already underway.
Devotional: One of the quiet struggles many people carry is wondering whether they truly belong. We may not say it out loud, but questions linger beneath the surface. Am I enough? Am I really accepted? Do I matter to God as much as others seem to? Those questions can shape how we live more than we realize.
John answers those fears with astonishing clarity. He says we are called children of God, and that is exactly what we are. Not someday. Not after we grow enough. Now. Our identity does not begin with our performance or spiritual maturity. It begins with God’s love.
That truth speaks directly into the Lenten journey. Lent invites us to examine our lives honestly, which can sometimes make us more aware of our shortcomings. But the purpose of that reflection is not to make us question our belonging. It is to help us remember where our identity truly comes from. We belong to God because God has chosen to love us.
John also reminds us that transformation is still unfolding. “We will be like Him,” he says, pointing toward a future we cannot yet fully see. That means spiritual growth is a process. We are already God’s children, but we are still becoming who God created us to be. There is freedom in that. We do not have to rush perfection. We can trust God’s ongoing work.
Sometimes people assume faith is mainly about behavior. Scripture points deeper. Faith is about relationship. It is about belonging. When we understand that we are loved as God’s children, obedience begins flowing from trust instead of fear.
Lent becomes less about proving devotion and more about deepening relationship. We open our hearts to God, not to earn His love, but because we already have it.
Action: Spend a few moments today reflecting on the phrase, “I am a child of God.” Notice any resistance or emotion that comes up and bring it honestly to God in prayer.
Prayer: Loving Father, thank You for calling me Your child. Sometimes I struggle to believe that I truly belong, but Your word reminds me that Your love defines who I am. During this Lenten season, help me rest in that identity. Continue shaping me into the person You created me to be. Give me confidence in Your love and trust in Your ongoing work within me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Your identity begins with God’s love, not your performance.
1 John 3:1-2 reminds us that we are called children of God, and that is what we are. Lent invites us to rest in that identity and trust God’s ongoing work within us.
