Courage for the Costly Way title image showing modern-day believers walking together in warm light, symbolizing faithful discipleship, courage, trust, and the call of Matthew 10:24-39 to follow Jesus even when faith costs comfort.
“The life we try to protect through fear can become small and guarded, but the life surrendered to Jesus becomes free.”
Matthew 10:24-39

Following Jesus does not always lead us down the easiest road, but it does lead us into a life held by God’s care. In Matthew 10:24-39, Jesus prepares His disciples for the reality that faithfulness can bring misunderstanding, rejection, and even tension with people they love. He does not hide the cost of discipleship. Instead, He tells the truth so His followers will not mistake hardship for failure.

Jesus speaks directly to fear. He knows that being misunderstood hurts. He knows that standing for truth can feel lonely. Yet He reminds His disciples that the Father sees what others miss. Not even a sparrow falls outside God’s care, and His children are worth far more than many sparrows. Courage grows when we trust that we are seen, known, and held by the Father.

The costly way of Christ is not a call to harshness, pride, or recklessness. It is a call to faithful surrender. Jesus calls His followers to confess Him openly, love Him above every other loyalty, and take up the cross. The life we try to protect through fear can become small and guarded, but the life surrendered to Jesus becomes free. In Christ, losing life for His sake is the way we find the life that is truly life.
