Paul looks back at the achievements and status he once considered valuable and says they no longer define him. Knowing Christ has become more important than everything he once depended on for identity and worth.
Devotional
Paul had an impressive résumé. He had education, religious standing, heritage, discipline, and a reputation he could point to with confidence. Then he met Christ and discovered that none of those things could give him what Jesus gave.
Paul did not suddenly decide that everything in his past was meaningless. He simply stopped asking those things to carry the weight of his identity.
We do the same thing with all kinds of things. We can build our identity around what we have accomplished, what people think of us, the role we hold, the family we belong to, the church we attend, the money we have saved, or even the struggles we have survived. These may all be meaningful parts of our story, but they make poor saviors.
A cross-shaped life requires learning to hold even good things loosely enough that they never take Christ’s place.
That kind of letting go can feel frightening. If I am not my job, my reputation, my achievements, my possessions, or the approval of other people, then who am I?
Grace answers: You are someone loved by God and called by Christ.
That identity is more secure than anything the world can give because the world cannot take it away.
Paul discovers freedom when he stops trying to prove his worth through what he has accumulated. We can discover that freedom too. We do not have to protect an image, win every comparison, or build a life impressive enough to justify our existence.
Christ is enough.
When we know that, surrender begins to feel less like losing and more like being set free.
Action
Name one achievement, possession, role, or opinion of others that has become too important to your sense of worth. Thank God for whatever is good in it, then remind yourself that it does not define you. Christ does.
Prayer
Loving God, I often look to accomplishments, possessions, roles, and other people’s approval to tell me that I matter. Forgive me when I ask temporary things to give me the security only You can provide. Teach me to hold every good gift with gratitude but not dependence. Root my identity in Christ and free me from the need to prove myself. May knowing Jesus become more precious to me than anything I could gain, protect, or achieve. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What I release from the center of my life makes room for Christ to remain there.
Paul discovered that even his greatest accomplishments couldn’t give him what he found in Christ. There is freedom in letting go of the need to prove our worth and remembering that our deepest identity is already secure in God’s love.
