In John 14:10–11, Jesus explains that His words and works reveal the Father’s presence and activity. The Father is at work in the Son, and the works of Jesus give the disciples reason to believe. Jesus’ life shows God’s character in action.
Devotional: Jesus tells Philip that His words and works are not separate from the Father. The Father is at work in Him. That means the things Jesus says and does are not random acts of kindness or isolated moments of power. They reveal God’s heart in motion.
That is important because many people believe in God in a general way, but they struggle to trust what God is like. They may believe God exists, but still wonder whether He cares. They may believe God is powerful, but wonder whether He is kind. They may believe God is holy, but wonder whether there is room for mercy when they fail. Jesus answers those fears not with theory, but with His life.
Look at His works. He does not use power to show off. He uses power to heal, restore, forgive, feed, deliver, and call people back to life. He notices the overlooked. He touches the untouchable. He confronts those who harm others through pride or hypocrisy. He speaks truth, but He never does it with cruelty. He offers grace, but He never treats sin as harmless. In Jesus, holiness and mercy are not enemies. They belong together.
That can steady us when our hearts are troubled. We may not always understand what God is doing in our own situation. We may not see the full picture. But we can look at the works of Jesus and remember that the Father is not careless. God’s character has been revealed.
Sometimes we need to rehearse what we know. Not because we are trying to talk ourselves into shallow optimism, but because memory strengthens faith. When fear is loud, remember what Jesus has done. Remember the cross. Remember the empty tomb. Remember the mercy that found you before you ever knew how much you needed it.
The Father is still at work. His work may not always look the way we expected, but His heart has not changed. The same God revealed in Jesus is still moving with truth, mercy, patience, and redeeming love.
Action: Make a short list of three works of Jesus from the Gospels that help you trust God’s heart. Keep that list where you can return to it this week.
Prayer: Father, thank You for showing Your heart through the words and works of Jesus. When I am afraid or confused, help me remember what Christ has revealed. Keep me from measuring Your goodness only by what I can see in the moment. Strengthen my faith through the mercy, truth, and love of Jesus. Help me trust that You are still at work, even when I do not understand how. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: The works of Jesus show the heart of the Father.
John 14:10–11 reminds us that the Father is revealed in the words and works of Jesus. His mercy, truth, healing, correction, and compassion show us what God’s heart is like.
When fear gets loud, we can remember what Christ has done. The God revealed in Jesus is still at work with redeeming love.
