In John 14:12, Jesus tells His followers that those who believe in Him will continue His works. Their ministry will expand after He goes to the Father. This promise does not depend on their strength, but on His ongoing work through them.
Devotional: It is easy to miss how surprising John 14:12 must have sounded. Jesus is speaking to disciples whose hearts are troubled. They are confused. They do not understand what is coming. They are not standing tall in fearless confidence. Before long, most of them will scatter. Peter will deny Him. Yet Jesus tells them they will continue His works.
That is grace. Jesus sees more in them than they can see in themselves. He knows their weakness, but He also knows what His Spirit will do. He knows that frightened disciples will become witnesses. He knows that people who stumble can still be restored. He knows that His mission will not end with their failure.
We need that reminder because fear can make us feel useless. When we are anxious, grieving, overwhelmed, or unsure, we may assume we have nothing to offer. We may think God only works through people who feel strong, clear, and confident. But Jesus does not wait for perfect disciples before He gives purpose. He calls ordinary people into His work and then supplies the grace they need.
Continuing the works of Jesus does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like showing mercy to someone who expects judgment. Sometimes it looks like telling the truth with love. Sometimes it looks like noticing the lonely person, praying when worry rises, serving without applause, forgiving when resentment feels easier, or choosing faithfulness in a season when nobody sees the effort.
Jesus does not steady troubled hearts only so they can feel better. He steadies them so they can keep living as His people. Purpose is part of His mercy. When fear tries to shrink our lives, Christ opens them again toward love.
You may not feel strong today. You may not feel ready. But the call of Jesus does not rest on your ability to impress Him. It rests on His power, His presence, and His grace. You are still called to love. You are still called to serve. You are still part of His work in the world.
Action: Choose one simple way to continue the work of Jesus today. Encourage someone, pray with someone, serve quietly, forgive, or show mercy where it is needed.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for giving purpose to people who are still learning, still growing, and still afraid. When I feel weak or overwhelmed, remind me that Your grace is enough. Help me continue Your work through small acts of love, truth, mercy, and faithfulness. Do not let fear make my world too small. Send me today with Your heart and Your strength. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Fear does not cancel the call to love.
John 14:12 reminds us that Jesus continues His work through ordinary people. The disciples were troubled and confused, but Jesus still saw purpose in them.
Fear may make us feel useless, but Christ does not set us aside. He steadies us, fills us with grace, and sends us to love, serve, and witness in His name.
