Praying in His Name, a wide 16:9 photo-realistic image of clasped hands resting beside an open Bible in warm candlelight, creating a quiet atmosphere of trust and surrender.

In John 14:13–14, Jesus teaches His disciples to ask in His name. Prayer in Jesus’ name is not a magic phrase or a way to control God. It means praying in relationship with Christ, under His authority, and for the Father’s glory.

Devotional: Many of us end our prayers with the words “in Jesus’ name.” We say them so often that we may not always stop to think about what they mean. Jesus’ promise in John 14 is not an invitation to treat His name like a password that unlocks whatever we want. Prayer in His name is deeper than that.

To pray in Jesus’ name means we come to the Father through the Son. We do not come as strangers trying to convince God to care. We come as people Christ has brought near. His mercy gives us access. His grace gives us confidence. His love teaches us to trust the Father’s heart.

It also means our prayers are being shaped by who Jesus is. We are not simply asking God to bless our plans. We are learning to desire what reflects Christ’s character. Sometimes that changes the way we pray. We may begin by asking God to remove every hard thing, but as we pray in Jesus’ name, we also ask for faithfulness, courage, wisdom, humility, and love. We ask not only for relief, but for God to be glorified through us.

That does not mean we cannot bring our honest needs to God. Jesus never tells troubled hearts to hide their fear. We can pray for healing. We can pray for provision. We can pray for protection, peace, reconciliation, direction, and help. But we bring those needs to God with open hands, trusting that He is wiser than we are and kinder than we can imagine.

Prayer steadies us because it reorients us. Fear turns us inward. Prayer turns us toward the Father. Anxiety tries to convince us that everything depends on us. Prayer reminds us that we belong to Christ.

When words are hard to find, begin simply. “Jesus, help me want what You want. Help me trust the Father’s heart. Help me pray as one who belongs to You.” That is a good place to start.

Action: Before you ask God for anything today, pause and pray, “Jesus, shape my desires to reflect Your heart.” Then bring your needs honestly before Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to pray in Your name with honesty, trust, and humility. Thank You for bringing me near to the Father. Forgive me for the times I try to use prayer to control outcomes instead of surrendering my heart to You. Shape my desires by Your love. Help me ask boldly, trust deeply, and seek the Father’s glory in all things. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Prayer in Jesus’ name brings my troubled heart near to the Father.

John 14:13–14 teaches us that prayer in Jesus’ name is more than a phrase at the end of a prayer. It is prayer rooted in relationship with Christ, trust in the Father, and surrender to God’s glory.

When fear turns us inward, prayer turns us back toward the One who holds us.
