"True peace isn’t found in perfect circumstances but in trusting God’s promises, sharing life with others in faith, and living out Christ’s love."
Advent is a season of waiting, preparing, and reflecting on the incredible gifts Christ brings into our lives. On this second Sunday of Advent, we focus on peace—not just any peace, but the kind that calms hearts, unites communities, and sustains us through life’s challenges. In Philippians 1:3-11, Paul writes from prison with a heart full of gratitude and joy for the Philippians, highlighting their partnership in the gospel. This partnership, or koinonia, is about more than working together; it’s about sharing life and mission. Paul reminds us that peace is found in these deep connections with others who walk with us in faith.
Paul also encourages the Philippians by expressing confidence in God’s faithfulness. He reminds them that the good work God began in their lives isn’t finished yet but will be carried to completion. This truth is a source of peace for us too. When life feels messy or incomplete, we can trust that God is still working, shaping, and refining us. Paul’s affection for the Philippians also shows how Christ-like love nurtures peace in our relationships. Loving others as Christ loves us isn’t always easy, but it brings healing, unity, and strength to our communities.
Finally, Paul prays that the Philippians’ love will abound in wisdom, leading to lives that reflect God’s righteousness. This growing love is the foundation for a life of peace—not only for ourselves but for those around us. As we prepare for Christmas, we are reminded that peace isn’t something we hoard for ourselves; it’s something we live out and share. By leaning into partnerships, trusting God’s promises, loving deeply, and growing in faith, we can reflect the peace of Christ in a world that desperately needs it.
