Luke 24:13–16 tells of two disciples leaving Jerusalem on the day of the resurrection. They are weighed down by grief and confusion, and though Jesus comes near and walks with them, they do not recognize Him. The passage shows that Christ’s presence is not limited by our awareness of it. He is able to come close even when sorrow has clouded our vision.
Devotional: Most of us have walked roads we never would’ve picked for ourselves. Some are marked by grief. Some by disappointment. Some by change we didn’t ask for and still don’t understand. We keep moving because life keeps moving, but our hearts aren’t always caught up. That’s part of what makes this passage so honest. These disciples are walking, but they are not walking lightly. They are carrying confusion and sadness, and they are carrying it together.
What comforts me here is not that they have strong faith. They don’t. Not yet. What comforts me is that Jesus comes near anyway. He does not wait for them to pray the right words, form the right conclusions, or regain their spiritual balance. He joins them on the road they are already on. That means the presence of Christ is not reserved for our best moments. He comes close on hard roads too.
There are times when we don’t recognize Him. That doesn’t mean He isn’t there. Sometimes our grief is too fresh. Sometimes our disappointment is too deep. Sometimes we are so focused on what has been lost that we miss the quiet mercy walking beside us. But the truth remains the same. Jesus is not absent simply because we cannot yet name His presence.
That can steady a person. You may not feel strong today. You may not feel clear. You may not even feel particularly hopeful. But if you belong to Christ, then you are not walking alone. The road may still be hard, but it is no longer empty. The risen Lord knows how to come near to weary people.
Action: Name one road in your life you would not have chosen. Offer it honestly to Jesus and ask Him to help you trust that He is with you on it.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for coming near when my heart is heavy and my vision is cloudy. Forgive me for the times I assume You are absent just because I cannot see clearly. Teach me to trust Your presence even on the roads I would not have chosen. Walk with me today, steady my heart, and help me know that I am never alone. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: A hard road is not a godless road when Jesus is walking it with you.
Some roads in life are chosen, and some are handed to us by grief, disappointment, or change we never asked for. Luke 24:13–16 reminds us that even when we do not recognize Him, Jesus comes near and walks with us. The disciples on the road to Emmaus were carrying sorrow and confusion, yet Christ was already beside them. This devotional is for anyone walking a hard road and needing the reminder that the presence of Jesus is not dependent on our ability to see clearly. Even on the road you did not choose, you are not alone.
