The Knowledge That Builds Up

1 Corinthians 8:1 talks about how knowledge can make us feel important or puffed up, but love is what truly builds us up and others. Paul addresses a situation where some believers felt superior because of their knowledge about food sacrificed to idols. He reminds them that while knowledge is good, it's love that truly strengthens our relationships and community. In essence, Paul emphasizes that our actions should be guided by love and consideration for others, not just by what we know.

Devotional:

In a world that often values knowledge as a sign of power and success, 1 Corinthians 8:1 offers us a vital reminder: knowledge alone can lead to pride, but love builds up. Paul addresses the Corinthians, who were proud of their knowledge about spiritual matters, but he gently points out that knowledge, when not tempered by love, can puff us up and create division rather than unity.

Knowledge is important—it helps us grow in understanding, make informed decisions, and navigate life’s complexities. But Paul challenges us to consider the purpose of our knowledge. Is it merely to elevate ourselves, or is it to serve and build up others in love?

True, godly knowledge doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It must be paired with love, the kind of love that seeks the good of others above our own interests. When we use our knowledge in this way, it becomes a powerful tool for strengthening relationships, encouraging others, and fostering community.

Think about the impact of knowledge shared with love. It’s the difference between a teacher who simply conveys information and one who genuinely cares for their students, wanting them to succeed not just academically but as whole people. In our daily lives, we have countless opportunities to use what we know to help others—whether it’s offering advice, lending a hand, or simply being there to listen and support.

When our knowledge is rooted in love, it reflects the heart of Christ. Jesus, who knew all things, always acted out of love—whether He was teaching the crowds, healing the sick, or challenging the Pharisees. His knowledge was never about showing off or proving a point; it was always about drawing people closer to God and helping them grow.

As we grow in our knowledge, let’s also grow in our love. Let’s use what we’ve learned to build others up, to encourage, and to serve, knowing that in doing so, we are reflecting the very nature of God.

Action: Consider how you can use your knowledge to build someone up this week. Whether it’s offering support, sharing wisdom, or simply being present, make an intentional effort to use what you know to encourage and strengthen someone else.

Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the knowledge You’ve given us, and we ask that You help us to use it with love. Teach us to see others through Your eyes, and to use what we know not to elevate ourselves, but to build others up. May our words and actions reflect Your love, bringing encouragement and strength to those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the Day: Knowledge, when paired with love, becomes a powerful force that builds up and strengthens others, reflecting the heart of Christ.
