Discernment and God's Will

In Colossians 1:9-10, Paul prays for the believers to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. This enables them to live lives worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way, and bearing fruit in good works.

Devotional:

Understanding God’s will can feel like trying to solve a puzzle. We long to know the right path, but the pieces don’t always fit together clearly. Paul’s prayer for the Colossians reminds us that discerning God’s will isn’t about figuring it out on our own—it’s about being filled with His wisdom and understanding through the Spirit.

Discernment is key to aligning our choices with God’s will. It helps us recognize His direction, even in the midst of uncertainty, and ensures our decisions lead to lives that glorify Him. This kind of discernment requires spiritual wisdom—knowledge that comes not from the world, but from a deep connection with God through prayer and His Word.

When we seek God’s will, it’s not just about asking, “What should I do?” but also, “Who should I become?” Paul reminds us that living in God’s will means bearing fruit in every good work, growing in knowledge, and reflecting Christ in our actions. Discernment helps us prioritize what truly matters in light of God’s eternal plan.

Action:

Spend time this week praying for clarity in an area of your life where you need to discern God’s will. Ask Him to fill you with wisdom and understanding. Consider journaling your prayers and any insights He reveals through Scripture or circumstances.

Prayer:

Father, I long to know and follow Your will. Fill me with spiritual wisdom and understanding so that I may live a life that honors You. Teach me to discern Your direction, bearing fruit in every good work and growing closer to You each day. Guide me to trust Your plan, even when the path is unclear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the Day:

Discernment helps us align our decisions with God’s will and live lives that glorify Him.
