Every Good Gift

Simple table with bread and water in sunlight, symbolizing contentment and gratitude and the gift of enough

November 26, 2025

James 1:17 reminds us that “every good gift” comes from a steady and unchanging source—God Himself. The verse paints a picture of divine generosity, showing that all blessings, whether seen or unseen, flow from the Father of lights, who does not shift like shadows. Unlike human goodness, which can fade or falter, God’s goodness is constant and pure. Every kindness we experience, every moment of beauty or grace, points back to His faithful hand. James calls us to recognize that “every good gift” in our lives—love, mercy, forgiveness, and provision—originates in God’s unwavering nature and invites us to live in gratitude for His endless generosity.

Devotional: Thanksgiving Eve has a special kind of stillness. The house smells like preparation—pies cooling on the counter, bread rising in the oven—and the air hums with quiet anticipation. Before tomorrow’s celebration begins, tonight is a sacred pause, a moment to look around and remember that every good and perfect gift has come from God’s hand.

James reminds us that every blessing—large or small—finds its source in the same place: the Father of heavenly lights. His goodness doesn’t flicker or fade. While the world changes, God remains steady, shining over us like the sun that never forgets to rise. Every meal shared, every laugh, every breath is a reflection of His generosity.

The gifts of God are not always wrapped in the obvious. Sometimes they come disguised in patience learned through waiting, peace discovered through prayer, or strength forged in struggle. Gratitude sharpens our eyes to see what we once overlooked. When we begin to trace the good in our lives back to its Source, we realize just how faithfully God has been providing all along.

The early believers James wrote to were scattered and struggling, trying to stay faithful in a world that felt uncertain. In that kind of life, it’s easy to forget where goodness comes from. So James anchored them—and us—in truth: the God who gives doesn’t change. His light doesn’t shift with our circumstances. Even in seasons of loss or longing, His grace remains constant.

On this night before Thanksgiving, before the table is full and the noise returns, take a moment to sit in that truth. Let gratitude be quiet before it’s loud. Look around your home, at the signs of provision—food, warmth, love—and whisper a prayer of thanks to the One who gave it all.

Because gratitude isn’t about how much we have, but how clearly we see. And when we see through the lens of grace, everything becomes gift.

Action: Take five minutes tonight to list the gifts God has given you this year—especially the ones that came through unexpected paths.

Prayer: Father of lights, thank You for every good and perfect gift You’ve placed in my life. Help me see Your blessings clearly, even in the simple things. Let my gratitude shine as steadily as Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Thought for the Day: Gratitude grows when we trace every good thing back to the Giver.

Cheryl is on vacation so no sermon this week.  This week of devotionals invites us to slow down, remember God’s goodness, and recognize His grace in both joy and struggle. Gratitude transforms ordinary days into sacred ones. From the first whisper of thanks to the song that lingers long after the feast, these reflections remind us that discipleship is found in giving thanks—in all things, through all seasons, and always in Christ.
