Trusting the Turn

Proverbs 3:5–6 urges God’s people to trust the Lord wholeheartedly rather than leaning on their own understanding. The passage promises that when we acknowledge God in all our ways, He will make our paths straight, not by removing every turn, but by faithfully guiding us through them.

Devotional:
Few things test our faith like uncertainty. We do not mind following God when the road makes sense, when the next step feels logical, or when the outcome seems predictable. What unsettles us are the turns we did not anticipate. Proverbs 3:5–6 speaks directly into those moments, calling us to trust God not partially, but fully.

Trusting the Lord with all our heart means releasing the illusion that understanding must come first. We are taught, often unconsciously, to value control. We want explanations before obedience and clarity before commitment. Yet Proverbs gently reminds us that leaning too heavily on our own understanding can actually limit our ability to follow where God leads.

Acknowledging God “in all your ways” does not mean constant certainty. It means intentional dependence. It is the daily choice to invite God into decisions both large and small, even when the path ahead looks unfamiliar. Trust grows not from having answers, but from walking closely with the One who does.

The promise that God will “make your paths straight” is often misunderstood. Straight does not mean easy or direct. It means rightly guided. God does not always smooth out the road, but God does keep us oriented toward life, faithfulness, and growth. The light may reveal a turn instead of a straight line forward, but that turn is not a mistake.

Epiphany reminds us that God’s guidance often surprises us. The Magi took a route that led through political danger and personal risk. They trusted the light even when the journey shifted. Their story echoes the wisdom of Proverbs. Trust does not eliminate the unexpected. It makes room for God to work within it.

Many of us hesitate at the turn because it feels like failure or loss of direction. Scripture invites us to see it differently. Sometimes the turn is the way forward. Sometimes God’s light leads us away from what feels familiar so that we can grow in faith and reliance.

Trusting the turn means believing that God is present even when our plans change. It means choosing faith over fear when the road bends. When we stop leaning solely on our own understanding, we begin to notice how faithfully God is still guiding us, step by step.

Action:
Identify one area of your life where you feel uncertain or resistant to change. Offer that place to God in prayer today, asking for trust rather than control as you follow where He leads.

Prayer:
God of wisdom, we confess how easily we rely on our own understanding. Teach us to trust You with our whole hearts, especially when the path ahead feels unfamiliar. Guide us through every turn, steady our steps, and help us walk in faith rather than fear. We place our trust in You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thought for the Day:
Trust grows when we follow God through the turns.

Trusting God does not mean knowing where the road leads. It means choosing faith when the path bends and understanding falls short. Proverbs reminds us that God guides us faithfully, even through unexpected turns.
If you are standing at a crossroads today, this may be your invitation to trust the light and take the next step.
